Borgogno Joins Oeno’s Italian Portfolio

23/02/2022

At the very heart of Oeno is the belief in sharing the joy of fine wine with the rest of the world, and so it gives us utmost pride and pleasure to become the newly-appointed exclusive UK distributor of Borgogno, one of Piemonte’s most historical and important wineries.

Borgogno Joins Oeno’s Italian Portfolio

Born in 1761 in the heart of Barolo, Borgogno is the oldest continuously operating Barolo producer who has stood witness to the most significant moments in Italian history. In 1861, the year of the Unification of Italy, Borgogno’s Barolo was  chosen to accompany the official celebratory lunch. Today, it continues to be the expression of a territory with admirable traditions, and yet is re-inventing itself with promising prospects in the future.

IN PRAISE OF SLOWNESS

Borgogno believes that the making of extraordinary wines takes time. When Giacomo Borgogno took over the management of the winery in 1920, he implemented the far-sighted policy of putting away stocks of good vintages in bottle and releasing them over two decades later. This very practice has established Borgogno’s incredible Barolo library collection today. “Being slow in one’s actions means having all the time to understand things and to do them in the right way. This is what we have been doing in our vineyards and with our wines since 1761.” expressed Andrea Farinetti, owner and winemaker of Borgogno.

Borgogno adopts the unconventional approach of valuing practice over theory in the cellar. Their wines are still made according to the traditions of long, spontaneous fermentations in concrete tanks without the use of selected yeasts, as well as long periods of ageing, strictly in large Slavonian oak barrels.

Furthermore, Borgogno’s ethical practice establishes it as one of today’s most respectable winemakers. Its uncompromising promise in wine quality roots from a genuine appreciation for nature. With absolute respect for the earth, Borgogno uses no chemical fertilisers and no herbicides in its winemaking process, and practices only eco-friendly treatments. This exquisite level of dedication sees them 100% organically certified since the 2019 harvest.

OENO’S LATEST EXCLUSIVE PRODUCER

The partnership with a wine producer as respected as Borgogno unequivocally strengthens Oeno’s Italian portfolio. Mattia Tabacco, Oeno’s Head of Buying and Rare Wines commented “OenoGroup is a young company and is privileged to partner with such an historic producer as Borgogno who are renowned for their great vineyards and the incredible ageworthiness of their wines. Barolo is known as the wine of kings and the king of wines, and with so many pieces in our portfolio we are proud that we truly now have a king on our chessboard.” Exclusively available at Oeno now is the Borgogno Barolo Cannubi 2015, the renowned cru dating back to as early as 1700 that demonstrates utmost elegance and longevity among the Barolo range. Originated in the erosion of overlaying terrains 13 million years ago, Borgogno Barolo Liste 2015 demonstrates unparalleled complexity. Also available is the Borgogno Barolo Fossati 2015 from one of the youngest plots, a alluring Nebbiolo with explosive floral and red fruit notes. Commenting on the new partnership, Andrea Farinetti, said “We are thrilled to have Oeno leading our import and distribution strategy in the UK. Oeno is clearly one of the leading emerging players in this market and is perfectly positioned to maximize the image and the potential of our historical brand with a unique go-to-market strategy. Our decision to cultivate a partnership with Oeno was based on their wide range of essential knowledge and resources within the wine industry. With their expertise and our enduring dedication to the fine wine market, our wines will find new homes in the UK market for the years to come.”
