Napa’s Last Frontier: Cervantes Family Vineyards
09/12/2020The latest addition to the Oeno portfolio is Cervantes Family Vineyards, an eleven-hundred acre ranch on Napa’s last frontier in the Pope Valley. Xavier Cervantes spent seven long years searching for the perfect spot, enduring two sales that fell through at the last minute, before finding this hidden gem on the eastern edge of Napa Valley. Very much a family-run winery, today Xavier works alongside his son, Jeronimo, who took the time to tell us their story in the video below.
Ranged by wild turkeys, deer and even the occasional bear, the family’s beautiful estate is known as Hine Ranch. Xavier hired Howard Backen who previously worked with Harlan Estate to construct the family’s winery along with two homes and an equestrian centre. In the winery things are run by winemaker Andy Erickson whose impressive resume includes stints at Ovid, Dalla Valle, and Mayacamas. Pope Valley’s reputation as Napa’s last frontier for winemaking combined with Erickson’s winemaking talent make Cervantes Family Vineyards a certain bet to become one of the Valley’s future stars. The rise in value of Pope Valley grapes is just one sign of this: in 2012 Hine Ranch’s grapes were selling for $1,900 a ton, yet by 2017 this had shot up to $7000 a ton.

The Cervantes family’s iconic wine is a magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon from their five-hectare hillside vineyard planted in 1998. The bottle is adorned with the winery’s eyecatching logo, composed from the initials of every member of the Cervantes family and topped with a regal crown.

Oeno is the exclusive representative for Cervantes Family Vineyards in the UK. We look forward to working closely with the Cervantes family as they produce ever more stunning wines from one of Napa’s last undiscovered terroir.
