Château Coutet
Located in the southern part of the Barsac appellation, Chateau Coutet is a Premier Cru estate which has a reputation for being one of the oldest producers of richly sweet Sauternes dessert wines. Coutet takes its name from the Gascon word for “knife” which reflects the crisp, refreshing acidity which provides a perfect counterpoint to the rich sweetness.
Interestingly, rather than an impressive historic chateau building, Chateau Coutet is set around an English fortress which was constructed in the 13th century. The property has changed hands numerous times over the years and one former owner, Gabriel-Barthelemy-Romain de Filhot, was even beheaded during the French Revolution and the property seized by the state.
In total the chateau has 35 hectares of vineyards planted with Sémillon (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%) on clay and limestone soils. The wine is vinified in French oak barrels and aged for 18 months before bottling. Chateau Coutet also produces very small quantities of a special wine called Cuvée Madame which is made only in the very best years.
