Clos l’Eglise
Dating back to the 18th century, Clos l’Eglise is one of the oldest chateaux in Pomerol. The estate’s modern history began in 1975 when the Moreau family modernised the winery and replaced traditional wooden fermentation tanks with stainless steel. In 1997 Clos l’Eglise was purchased by Sylviane Garcin Cathiard who paid 12 million euros, a record sum at the time for a Pomerol chateau.
Today the estate is run by Sylviane’s daughter, Hélène Garcin, and her husband Patrice Lévèque. The couple also oversee Château Barde-Haut and Poesia in Saint-Émilion. Clos l’Eglise is located in the centre of Pomerol with sandy-gravel soils underlaid by clay and a more continental climate than that of the Médoc. The chateau’s 5.9 hectares of vineyards are planted with Merlot and Cabernet Franc with iron-rich soils which help to give Clos l’Eglise its distinctive character in the bottle.
The chateau’s Grand Vin is typically composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc with maturation in new French oak barrels for 18-24 months. A combination of exceptional terroir and talented winemaking creates a richly-textured, opulent Pomerol which is fast becoming one of the region’s superstars.
