Penfolds G4: The Reward of Patience
08/10/2020Earlier this year Penfolds unveiled their latest challenger to rival the fairest and finest wines on the planet, their much-awaited g4. Conceived as a limited release multi-vintage Grange, just 2500 bottles of g4 have been released as part of the Penfolds Collection 2020. Competition is expected to be extremely fierce amongst collectors and investors vying to get their hands on this rarest of wines from a blue chip Australian winery.
g4 is a sublime blend of four of the finest vintages of the past two decades: 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2016. Most of these are already hallowed years amongst collectors lucky to hold them in their cellars; Grange 2008 was awarded 100 points by the Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, while the 2002 and 2004 vintages are both highly-praised by Penfolds’ Chief Winemaker Peter Gago.

The final component is Grange 2016 which was also released as part of the Penfolds Collection 2020 (below) and has already been awarded a near-perfect 99 point score by Wine Advocate. This younger vintage is described as “sophisticated and sculptured –a dynamic oscillation between muscularity/solidity and polish/sleekness” by Peter Gago who adds that this component also brings a welcome touch of freshness to the overall g4 personality.
“Comprising 100% Grange DNA, Penfolds g4 has been expertly blended to fully animate and integrate the strengths of each Grange vintage,” commented Penfolds. “This limited release multi-vintage Grange takes Max Schubert’s multi-regional masterpiece, where the sum is greater than the whole, to a new imaginative level.”

As you would expect from a wine of this calibre, g4 has a very long life ahead of it and will develop and evolve in the cellar over the next few decades. Peter Gago gives a drinking window for this wine of 2025-2080, reflecting the incredible complexity and longevity of Penfolds’ Grange wines.
Both Grange 2016 and g4 are expected to perform very well on the investment market in coming years thanks to the strictly limited production and incredible rarity and quality of these wines.
Oeno currently has a very limited availability of both g4 and Penfolds Grange 2016. Please contact your account manager as soon as possible to secure your allocation.
