Philip Togni, The Original Napa Valley Winemaker
03/03/2021Philip Togni is a name in Napa Valley that everyone in the industry recognizes. Philip is originally from the UK, however studied under Emile Peynaud in Bordeaux in the 1950s and moved to California in 1959. Not only has Philip been running his own successful vineyard since 1981, Philip also was a key part in helping to develop some of California’s most historic vineyards through the 60’s and 70’s. Philips most notable role in the Napa Valley prior was at Inglenook. There Philip helped Don Chappellet start his vineyard and winery in 1967 on what is now Pritchard Hill, in that time amongst a host of great wines the 1969 Chappellet he made is considered one of California’s greatest ever. One last legendary 1975 Cabernet and Philip then purchased and founded The Philip Togni vineyard in the 80’s in Spring Mountain.
Philip’s daughter, Lisa Togni, has been running the family business since 2000 and is also the winemaker. Lisa is MBA qualified and travelled the world prior to joining the business after completing harvests in Australia and Château Léoville-Barton in Bordeaux. Under her hand Philip Togni Vineyard is making some of the finest wines in its history and the estate looks in great shape for decades to come.

The estate is in the Mayacamas range on the western side of the valley. It sits at 2,000 feet elevation above St Helena and has cooling influences from altitude and from Pacific air flows coming through the Calistoga gap. The vineyard are proud that all the grapes are estate grown and farmed organically.

Justin Knock MW (Chief Wine Analyst at Oeno) says “His wines are some of the longest-lived in Napa, showing the potential of mountain Cabernet to evolve with the freshness and complexity that is comparable to Bordeaux of the 80s and 90s”. “One of the hidden treasures of Napa. Philip Togni is a rare thing – a British winemaker in Napa. The wines are exceptional value for the quality. The provide another style of wine to our range of Californian wines”.
Oeno are excited to offer this exceptional mountain Cabernet which is amazing, good value for such a high quality of wine from this region. With the USD weakening the wines are even better value, and we expect these wines to appreciate in value within the next 10 years. Oeno are pleased to offer the 2018 & 2016 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the 2018 Tanbark Hill Cabernet Sauvignon to the market and our clients.
