Spain’s Original Icon: Vega Sicilia
28/04/2021Vega Sicilia is easily Spain’s most famous winery thanks to a stellar reputation both at home and internationally. In the words of Justin Knock, MW and Oeno’s Director of Wine, “France has Chateau Latour, California has Screaming Eagle, Italy has Sassicaia, Australia has Penfolds Grange, and Spain has Vega Sicilia.”
The estate was founded back in 1864 Don Eloy Lecanda Y Chaves who planted the property with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Carmenere cuttings he had brought back from Bordeaux. By 1882 he had planted some 500,000 vines here on the high plains of Spain’s RIbera del Duero region. For many years the property focused on the production of brandy rather than wine, and the estate struggled to make ends meet financially.
In the 1900s the property was purchased by the Herrero brothers who gave it the name Vega Sicilia. Together with winemaker Domingo Garramiola Txomin they produced the very first vintage of Vega Sicilia Unico in 1915, blending native Tinto Fino grapes with the Bordeaux varieties planted by Don Eloy Lecanda Y Chaves. Thanks to the exceptional terroir and incredible ageing ability, the Unico quickly became Spain’s first iconic wine.
Oeno is pleased to be able to offer the Vega Sicilia Unico 2010 which received a perfect 100 point score from Tim Atkin MW and 99 points from James Suckling. Described by Peter Dean of The Buyer as ‘the best Unico I have tasted”, this vintage has enjoyed strong interest since its release in 2019.
“This iconic Spanish wine is a blend of the local clone of Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) with 6% Cabernet Sauvignon which is matured in the winery for 6 years in large and small oak barrels before bottling and release”, explains Justin Knock. “The 2010 vintage boasts incredible ageing potential backed up by Vega Sicilia’s proven track record of cellaring for decades. This is one of the most sought-after wines from collectors and wine lovers, assuring a great liquidity in the market.”
