Daniel Walker on why Fine Wine Investment is a great option during market turbulence

26/11/2021

Previously on the ‘Entrepreneurs on Fire’ podcast, our Head of Investment shared how fine wine is the best investment you can make during market turbulence.

Daniel Walker on Entrepreneurs on Fire

Daniel opened with a wonderful Oscar Wilde quote- “We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.” If grasping every marvellous opportunity was the vision he lives by, fine wine then poses itself as a brilliant gem among the investment market. The same quote seemed apt for Daniel’s own experience too. After having worked at trading companies for some years, he soon realised that the world of shares and stocks didn’t align with his core values.

We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.” – Oscar Wilde

When Daniel first came across fine wine investment, he was amazed by the enormous potential it possessed. Fine wine, by definition, only represents no more than 1% of the global wine market. Together with the fact that it is always consumed at a much rapid rate than it is produced makes fine wine a natural scarcity. The world has also shown a phenomenal demand for wine, with consumption in the U.S. market alone reaching 1 billion gallons in the first time in history.

Fine wine is also an excellent diversification for any portfolio. Volatility in the stock market is often inevitable due to socio-political incidences happening every day, especially during the pandemic. Wine being an asset-backed investment doesn’t get affected by these unpredictabilities, and so presents itself as an impenetrable market. While fine wine investment is not exactly a get-rich-quick scheme to make millions overnight, investors can be rest assured they won’t lose everything they’ve worked hard on. According to the Liv-Ex report, fine wine has continually outperformed the S&P 500 with 13.6% increase over 15 years, compared to 7.8% of Dow Jones S&P 500 (excluding dividends).

OenoGroup is proud to offer an all-inclusive, impeccable wine investment service. It brings together some of the world’s most qualified wine experts, including the first female Master of Wine of Spain; the highest accolade one can achieve in the wine world. Investors are also guided by a dedicated portfolio manager throughout the whole process. Another reason OenoGroup has risen as a company managing USD$50 million, and was even voted as The World’s No.1 Wine Investment Firm 2021, was the multitude of exit strategies it offers. From OenoTrade that distributes to an impressive network of wine bars, restaurants and hotels, to the professional wine team who has built close affiliations with vineyards around the world. As well as OenoHouse, a boutique wine shop at the heart of the City of London with a collection of some of the rarest bottles for our guests.

Daniel also pointed out that counterfeit, price manipulations and lack of authenticity or transparency were the three major issues in the wine investment market. Therefore Oeno has always made its utmost priority to trade wine with optimal quality and security. Apart from highly secure bonded facilities, Oeno has the very first in-house anti-fraud unit in the industry to assure complete authenticity.

In times of market unpredictability as well as global inflation going up to 5%, it’s crucial to make prudent decisions. So, as wine investment shifts from being a luxurious asset to an investment accessible to all professional investors, it has become a necessity for a good portfolio.
