Cueva de Contador is a 100% Tempranillo wine from seven parcels of limestone-clay soil located between San Vicente and Ábalos. The wines spend 18 months in new French oak barrels. A powerful, spicy, balsamic, complex wine with a truly great aromatic structure. This wine deserves to be laid down for a number of years.
Contador has become one of the great cult wines in Spain. And even more so after achieving for two consecutive vintages one of the highest distinctions for which a wine is eligible: 100 Parker points, obtained in the 2004 and 2005 vintages.
The grapes come from small plots owned by the winery, distributed in various towns in the Rioja Alavesa area: San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Briones, Ábalos and Labastida.Diversity of soils, microclimates, orientations and altitudes make for a great wine. Very complex and rich in nuances, Contador is a pure and sincere expression of the land.
According to Benjamín Romeo “A great wine is born in the vineyard”. It is impossible to make a wine like this without careful farming and In order to extract the highest possible quality, the vines are goblet-pruned, leaving only one bud per thumb. Less production, but of the highest quality.
