Dominio de Es La Mata is a red wine produced in D.O. Ribera del Duero by the winery Dominio de Es, in San Esteban de Gormaz, Soria.
After 10 years as a technical manager in Dominio de Atauta, Bertrand Sourdais starts this personal project in Ribeira del Duero. Dominio de Es is formed by 4 vineyard areas (La Mata, Llanos del Almendro, Camino Olmillos and Valdegatiles) with pre-phylloxera vines on sandy soils, located at approximately 1000 metres of altitude.
The vineyards are cultivated biodynamically and, in the winery, they aim for a friendly and steady production, without the tannins that Bertrand Sourdais reflected in their wines some years ago. Ageing for long periods in large used barrels to give value to the finesse of the terroir where these fabulous wines are made.
“The 2018 La Mata comes from an ancient ungrafted vineyard in a part of Atauta that has more clay in the soil and produces rounder and lusher wines. The blend is approximately 90% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), 6% Alicante Bouschet (or Garnacha Tintorera) and 4% white Albillo, and it fermented with destemmed grapes and indigenous yeasts in oak vats, followed by 19 months in barrique. It feels darker and has notes of licorice and graphite with a touch of ink and leather. The palate reveals similar flavors and abundant grainy tannins and is a little earthy and more rustic. This feels different within the context of the other vintages and the rest of wines from the same year. It’s a bit of a question mark today, at least the bottle I tasted.” Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate. (2021)
