Square Mile Watch Awards 2019

Oeno was delighted to attend the Square Mile Watch Awards gala on the 17th of October and to sponsor this year’s Readers’ Choice Award.

The Square Mile Watch Awards were launched in 2018 and are the first consumer awards in London purely focused on mechanical watchmaking. According to Square Mile, the awards ceremony was born of a vision “to help watch lovers of every age and experience decide on their next timepiece.”

The winning watches are chosen by an expert panel of 12 drawn from across the industry with the exception of the Readers’ Choice category which is selected by a public vote of Square Mile readers.

This year’s stunning black tie ceremony was hosted at Landing Forty Two in the Leadenhall Building in the heart of the City which boasts sweeping views of London. Guests were treated to a three-course meal and live entertainment before the commencement of the prize-giving ceremony.

The event was attended by a diverse audience of watch enthusiasts and big industry names including the legendary honorary guest Jean-Claude Biver. Biver’s glittering career began with an apprenticeship at Audemars Piguet in the 1970s and has since included rebuilding the Swiss brand Blancpain, planning a mission to Mars with TAG Heuer, and serving as President of the LVMH Watch Division.

This year’s selection of entries for the Readers’ Choice award included something for everyone from ₤100,000 showpieces to everyday staples. The winning watch for this year is the iconic Patek Philippe Ref.5172G-001 Chronograph.

According to Square Mile, this fresh take on the 5170 “follows on from a long line of classic Patek references, including the Ref.1463 from the 1960s (rare models of which sell upwards of £100k), but with a slightly more sporty edge.”

“The new reference does away with some of the more classical chronograph elements in favour of bold Arabic numerals, round pushers and a warm blue-coloured dial. Add to that a matching blue calfskin strap and the pleasing addition of stepped lugs, and you’re looking at a watch that straddles vintage appeal and a contemporary edge. This is Patek dressed in smart-casual attire.”
