Distillerie des Moisans

Les Moisans is a lovely hamlet crossed by a narrow winding lane. The estate includes the ageing cellars, the twelve-still distillery, the offices, and the beautifully restored Manor House for welcoming visitors and cognac aficionados.

Our family history is rooted in the land and its vines, beginning with the acquisition of the Moisans estate.

To make characterful cognacs faithful to our family tradition, we believe that the terroir is important, the vineyard is essential, and the care given to our wines is absolutely crucial.

In the 1960s, the founder Roland Bru created the Distillerie des Moisans and bought his first vines.

Production

The estate covers 60 hectares in Fins Bois and Petite Champagne. This region of the AOC cognac is known for the roundness of the eaux-de-vie it produces and for the delicacy and suppleness of the cognacs aged there. The dominant grape variety is Ugni blanc, a late grape variety that will be harvested at the end of summer, it produces a pale yellow and dry wine of extreme delicacy.

In a large distillery comprising 12 copper stills, our wines will be treated in double distillation. Distillation is a continuous process over 24 hours. Two passes follow one another. Only the heart of the second pass, “the good heat”, is kept to become the future cognac. All parts of the stills in contact with the liquid are made of copper. This plays an essential role as a catalyst in the production of Cognac.

In our aging cellars buried halfway down the ground or built on the hillside, more than 1,300 350-liter barrels and around fifty 350 to 520 hectoliter barrels made of Limousin oak contain our precious eaux-de-vie. Our Cellar Master plays on the distillation method, the aging methods, the blending of several eaux-de-vie and achieves a harmonious composition that will become the identity, the signature and the flagship of our COGNACS.
