And we’ve got three bottles
We’re talking about the Henri Jayer 1982 Richebourg vintage.
Henri Jayer, or rather, the “Pope of Burgundy”, as he’s so often called, is a legend among vignerons.
When he was just 16, Henri took over his family’s land during WWII. His marriage to a winemaker’s daughter and oenology studies fueled his passion for viticulture.
While other winemakers at the time were filtering their wine to make it look clearer, Henri knew that this could diminish its flavour.
Furthermore, all grapes were 100% destemmed, which was unheard of in those days.
He never resorted to chemicals even when he could – he used only his hands and his horse.
While Domaine Romanée-Conti and Leroy command similar prices, their supplies are replenished with a new vintage each year.
With Henri Jayer wines, that’s not the case.
The Richebourg was made from vineyards belonging to the current Domaine Meo-Camuzet – the Jayer production of Richebourg presumably began in the mid-1940s and ended in 1987.
It is said that once you’ve had a taste, you will never forget it. Henri Jayer only produced two or three barrels of Richebourg each year, so quantities were very limited and extremely hard to come by.
It’s safe to say the 1982 Richebourg vintage is iconic.
It’s renowned for its depth, complexity, and exceptional ageing potential, making it a prized possession for any serious wine collector.
We’ve managed to get my hands on three bottles!
